Past & Present

The original Beavertail Lighthouse was built in 1749, the third such lighthouse in the Thirteen Colonies. Made out of wood, it burned down 4 years later unsurprisingly since they used a fire at the top as the beacon. Rebuilt out of stone, it stood until the end of the Revolutionary War before being burned by British soldiers on their way back home. The stone foundation you see off to the right of the image is where the old tower stood. The current lighthouse was built in 1856 and moved further off the coast.
